Abstract

Neo-republicanism has contributed to political philosophy with its notion of freedom as non-domination and also with its conception of citizens committed to public affairs. In line with this conception of citizens, neo-republicanism accepts civil
disobedience as a mechanism of citizen control. I will argue that under the neorepublican theory civil disobedience involves domination among citizens, that is, it involves horizontal domination. Therefore, the practice of civil disobedience would not be consistent with neo-republicanism’s own ideals.
